PHARMACIA BIOTECH ASKS COURT FOR NON-INFRINGEMENT RULING

PISCATAWAY, N.J., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Pharmacia Biotech Inc., the New Jersey-based distributor of chromatography instruments, equipment and media used in biotech research and biopharmaceutical production, announced today that it has filed suit in federal court to obtain a ruling that its new high performance chromatography products do not infringe a competitor's patents.
Pharmacia Biotech has recently begun marketing high-performance ion exchange columns and media under the tradename RESOURCE(TM) Q and S. In recent communications, PerSeptive Biosystems of Cambridge, Mass., has accused Pharmacia Biotech of infringing its U.S. patents on "Perfusive Chromatography" methods and matrices. The Pharmacia Biotech lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, asks the court to rule that sales of RESOURCE Q and S do not infringe the patents, and also requests a finding that the two PerSeptive patents are invalid and unenforceable.
