PHARMACEUTICAL RESOURCES TO DISTRIBUTE ALPRAZOLAM FOR ALPHAPHARM; ALPHAPHARM RECEIVES FDA APPROVAL FOR ALPRAZOLAM

SPRING VALLEY, New York, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Pharmaceutical Resources, Inc. (NYSE: PRX), today announced that its subsidiary Par Pharmaceutical, Inc., will serve as Alphapharm's exclusive distributor of Alprazolam under an agreement previously announced in May. The company reported that Alphapharm has received tentative approval from the Food and Drug Administration for Alprazolam Tablets USP in .25mg, .5mg and 1mg strengths. The approval will become final on the patent expiry date of Oct. 19, 1993.
Alprazolam is the generic equivalent of Upjohn's Xanax, an anti-anxiety drug with U.S. sales of over $500 million. Par expects to begin shipping the product to customers following the patent expiration date.
Kenneth Sawyer, president and chief executive officer of Pharmaceutical Resources, commented: "This marks the first of several products for which we will serve as the exclusive distributor for Alphapharm. Prior to the patent exclusivity period expiration in mid-October, we will commence our pre-launch marketing efforts in preparation for the distribution of this product. We are excited about the sales potential of Alprazolam and hope that this product will contribute strongly to our fiscal 1994 financial results."
Pharmaceutical Resources, Inc., is a holding company with subsidiaries that manufacture, market and develop a broad line of generic drugs.
