PFS:WINDOWWORKS SELECTED FOR BUNDLING WITH NEW LINES OF COMPAQ PCS
BOSTON, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Spinnaker Software Corporation (NASDAQ: SPKR) today announced that PFS:WindowWorks(tm) release 1.0 has been selected for preinstallation on several new personal computer models from Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ). Featured in the preinstallation arrangement are the new COMPAQ Contura notebook computers and COMPAQ ProLinea desktop computers, Compaq's new lines of affordable PCs announced separately today. PFS:WindowWorks is the first application software ever to be selected for preinstallation with COMPAQ personal computers.
Gian Carlo Bisone, vice president of North American marketing for Compaq Computer Corporation, said today that, "Compaq is pleased to announce our preinstallation arrangement with Spinnaker Software for PFS:WindowWorks. With over one half-million copies of PFS:WindowWorks sold to date, we're sure this popular software will add significant value to our new COMPAQ Contura and ProLinea families of personal computers."
"Compaq's reputation for quality engineering is known worldwide," said Cindy Sweetser, vice president of marketing for Spinnaker's PFS: software division. "That's why we're particularly pleased that Compaq chose to preinstall PFS:WindowWorks with their new Contura and ProLinea families of personal computers. This agreement further extends the reach of PFS:WindowWorks into the marketplace and offers tremendous value to our customers."
PFS:WindowWorks is an integrated software package for Windows featuring a powerful word processor with page layout features, spreadsheet, chart editor, database, label maker, address book and communications module (terminal). The program, Which normally sells for $149 suggested retail, also offers hotlinking to dynamically link key modules of the program together.
PFS:Window Works, which began shipping in mid-1991, has garnered
enthusiastic comments from the press. PC World recently concluded that "PFS: Windows Works exceeds (Microsoft's Works for Windows) with the impressive text handling and formatting capabilities of its word processor, which are similar to those found in desktop publishing programs." PCWeek said that PFS:WindowsWorks "is an intuitive set of applications that fully exploit Windows' graphical potential." Info World added that "If your goal is a great-looking product, then PFS:WindowWorks holds the edge."
PFS:WindowWorks has also been widely adopted as a strategic application for new Windows-ready PCs, and is currently bundled by 12 other computer manufacturers.
PFS:WindowWorks provides a comprehensive list of page layout and word processing features to let users create multi column newsletters, import and manipulate graphics files, do sophisticated text wrapping, scale fonts on the fly from 4 to 127 point, see true WYSIWYG ("What you see is what you get") displays on-screen, and add custom shapes and shading with the art toolbox.
With PFS:WindowWorks' built-in hotlinking feature the user can, for example, write a memo in the word processor, build a spreadsheet in the spreadsheet module, and then link the two by pasting a copy of the spreadsheet into the memo. The memo remains "live" and linked to the spreadsheet: so that every change to the spreadsheet is automatically reflected in the memo. If you create a chart based on the spreadsheet and paste it into the memo, the chart will also update automatically whenever the spreadsheet data changes.
Cutting and pasting are facilitated by the Windows Graphical User Interface (GUI). All tasks are accomplished within PFS:WindowWorks, and switching between modules is done simply by clicking on icons at the bottom of the screen.
PFS:WindowWorks requires an ISA or compatible 286, 386 (386 SX or 386 DX) or higher, with a clockspeed of 16 MHz or higher recommended; 1 MB RAM (1.5 MB of RAM or more is recommended); a hard disk drive; 5.25" (high density 1.2 MB) or 3.5" (720K) floppy disk drive; EGA, VGA, Hercules graphics card, or compatible video graphics adaptor and monitor; a Hayes or compatible modem for communications; a mouse; DOS 3.1 or higher; and Microsoft Windows 3.0 or higher. These new COMPAQ products will be shipped with MS-DOS 5.0, Windows 3.1, and a Compaq mouse. Windows is a trademark of the Microsoft Corporation.
