PFIZER TO EXPAND LITESSE PRODUCT LINE, COMMERCIALIZE 'NEXT GENERATION' LITESSE II

NEW YORK, July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Food Science Group of Pfizer Inc (NYSE: PFE) is upgrading its recently expanded Litesse(R) production facility in Terre Haute, Ind., to increase the range of Litesse products made there for the food processing industry.
An interim facility to produce the "next generation" of premium- quality bulking agents, Litesse II, is planned for start-up in November. The full project, which will add manufacturing flexibility and permit the addition of several new Litesse family members, is scheduled for completion next year.
Market research initiated by the Food Science Group reflects continued worldwide consumer demand for a greater variety of better- tasting healthful foods, said Donald F. Farley, president of the Food Science Group.
"Pfizer is dedicated to meeting the challenges of the growing lite foods marketplace around the world," Mr. Farley said, "and we are backing our commitment with the capital investments required to anticipate the client needs identified by our unique consumer research programs." Further advances in Litesse technology will be announced soon, he added.
Litesse, introduced in March 1991, has become the ingredient of choice when formulating foods lower in calories and fat, Pfizer said. And while it meets most current formulation requirements, newer forms are being sought to enhance taste and performance in several additional food categories, including confectionery products.
Food Science also markets Dairy-Lo(R) and Veri-Lo(R) for use in lower fat foods; Veltol(R) and Veltol-Plus(R), high-performance flavor enhancers; nature-identical Chy-Max(R) milk coagulant for high quality cheese, and a variety of food protectants.
Pfizer Inc is a research-based diversified health care company with global operations. The company reported sales of approximately $7.2 billion for 1992.
NOTE: Litesse, Litesse II, Dairy-Lo, Veri-Lo, Veltol and Veltol- Plus, and Chy-Max are registered U.S. trademarks of Pfizer Inc.
