PFIZER TO BUILD PCC PLANT TO SUPPLY REPAP WISCONSIN AT KIMBERLY, WIS.
NEW YORK, March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Pfizer Specialty Minerals Group said today it will break ground in March for a precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) plant to supply Repap Wisconsin at Kimberly, Wis. Repap Wisconsin is a division of Repap Enterprises, Inc. headquartered in Montreal. PCC is a specialty pigment used to coat and fill premium quality paper.
Scheduled for start-up in October, the on-site facility will be Pfizer's 26th PCC satellite, 25 of which are already operating at major paper mills in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Three more are being built in North America and a portable PCC unit is currently supplying product to a major paper mill in Europe while its permanent plant is under construction.
Owned and operated by Pfizer, the plant at Kimberly will pipe a slurry form of Albacar HO(A), a high-brightness, high-opacity pigment, directly into the adjacent Repap mill for use in its coated paper products.
The satellite PCC program has revolutionized papermaking by facilitating the industry's conversion from an acid-based process to an alkaline technology that produces brighter paper that will last for centuries, Pfizer said.
Key economic and environmental benefits are driving the paper industry's switch to the alkaline technology. Unlike the classic acid process, alkaline papermaking permits the substitution of PCC for wood fiber, reduces the consumption of titanium dioxide and other chemicals, is less corrosive and generates less effluent.
Limestone, the source of calcium carbonate for producing lime, will be obtained from Pfizer's quarrying operation at Gulliver, Mich. In making PCC, lime is reacted with water and carbon dioxide in a computer- controlled process that also reduces air emissions.
The PCC unit to be built at Kimberly was designed in collaboration with Repap engineers to conform environmentally and structurally with the company's existing facilities.
Repap Wisconsin is a world class coated paper complex containing three modern coated paper machines with a total annual capacity of 470,000 tons of high quality coated freesheet and groundwood grades as well as an integrated bleached groundwood mill.
Repap Enterprises Inc. is a fully-integrated North American forest products company with assets of over $3 billion. Its family of companies are located throughout North America in Newcastle, New Brunswick; Vancouver and Prince Rupert, British Columbia; The Pas, Manitoba; New York; Valley Forge, Pa., and Kimberly and Appleton, Wis.
Pfizer Inc. is a diversified, research-based health care company with businesses in pharmaceuticals, hospital products, consumer products, animal health, and specialty chemicals and minerals. The company reported sales of more than $6.95 billion for 1991.
 (A) Albacar HO is a registered Pfizer trademark.
