PFIZER TO BUILD PCC PLANT TO SUPPLY; SIMPSON PLAINWELL PAPER AT PLAINWELL, MICH.
PFIZER TO BUILD PCC PLANT TO SUPPLY; SIMPSON PLAINWELL PAPER AT PLAINWELL, MICH. PLAINWELL, Mich., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Officials of Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) and Simpson Plainwell Paper Company broke ground here today for an onsite facility that will manufacture precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), a specialty filler used in the alkaline papermaking process. Scheduled to go on stream in the fourth quarter of this year, the plant will pipe a slurry of PCC directly into Simpson's Plainwell Mill and will also supply other paper mills in the area. To be owned and operated by Pfizer, the unit will employ about 10 people, most to be hired locally. It will be Pfizer's 28th PCC satellite, 25 of which are already operating at major paper mills in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Three more are being built in North America and a mobile PCC unit is currently supplying product to a major mill in France on an interim basis while a permanent plant is under construction. Paul R. Saueracker, vice president - sales and marketing, Pfizer Specialty Minerals Group, was joined at the groundbreaking by Bryce Siedl, Simpson Specialty Group manager, and Roger Huckendubler, Simpson Plainwell Operations manager. Economics and environmental benefits are driving the paper industry's switch to alkaline technology, Saueracker said. Unlike the classic acid process, alkaline papermaking permits the substitution of PCC for wood fiber, reduces chemicals consumption, is less corrosive and generates less effluent. Moreover, the alkaline system produces a brighter, stronger sheet with improved opacity and an almost endless shelf-life. Limestone for producing lime, a key ingredient in the production of PCC, will be obtained from Pfizer's quarrying operation at Gulliver, Mich. To make PCC, lime is reacted with water and carbon dioxide in a computer-controlled process that reduces air emissions. The Pfizer plant to be built at Plainview was designed with Simpson engineers to conform environmentally and structurally with the company's existing facilities. The Plainwell Mill has 340 employees and produces 88,000 tons a years of printing and writing papers, including recycled grades. Simpson Paper Company, headquartered in San Francisco, is a subsidiary of Simpson Investment Company of Seattle, a privately owned firm founded in Washington in 1890 as a small logging company. Simpson Paper Company owns 11 pulp and paper mills in Washington, Oregon, California, Texas, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Vermont. Pfizer Inc. is a diversified, research-based health care company with businesses in pharmaceuticals, hospital products, consumer products, animal health, and specialty chemicals and minerals. The company reported sales of more than $6.95 billion for 1991. -0- 6/10/92 /CONTACT: Tony Biesada, 212-573-2055, or Rick Honey, 212-573-2051, both of Pfizer/ (PFE) CO: Pfizer Inc; Simpson Plainwell Paper Company ST: Michigan, New York IN: PAP SU:
