PFIZER PLANS NEW MANUFACTURING UNIT AT GROTON SITE
GROTON, Conn., Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Pfizer Inc (NYSE: PFE) has

committed some $20 million for engineering design and initial purchase of equipment for a new, multimillion-dollar pharmaceutical manufacturing unit at its Groton plant, J. Robert Schachner, plant manager, announced today.
The new facility is an organic synthesis unit which manufactures bulk pharmaceuticals. Schachner said it will be one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in the world.
"This investment reaffirms the key manufacturing role this plant plays for Pfizer, and the commitment Pfizer has to the state and, particularly, southeastern Connecticut," said Schachner. "We are making a serious commitment, and hope the state and the community do their part to help by expediting the permitting and approval processes."
"Superior manufacturing has historically driven Connecticut's success," said Gov. Lowell P. Weicker. "State-of-the-art, high-tech manufacturing technology such as Pfizer proposes is fundamental to the economy of our state."
"This facility will be highly automated with an emphasis on efficiency," Schachner said, "and will continue the progression of our plan to improve productivity and reduce overhead. These are key factors in our ability to be competitive in today's world."
The new facility will also have an important role in process development and technology transfer, Schachner said. "The proximity of this modern facility to central research will enhance our ability to efficiently transfer production technology from the lab to full-scale production. The computer-based production systems will help expedite the sharing of information among Pfizer plants around the world.
The new organics facility is the latest in a series of announced investments in the Groton manufacturing plant totalling well over $150 million. Over the past few years Pfizer has installed several environmental projects to improve performance and process automation projects to improve productivity. In March, for example, the company announced it would build a $40-million wastewater treatment facility to reduce discharges to the environment by 90 percent.
Pfizer Inc is a diversified, research-based health care company with businesses in pharmaceuticals, hospital products, consumer products, animal health, and specialty chemicals and minerals.
