 PFIZER NAMES BESSEY HEAD OF U.S. PHARMACEUTICALS;
 MCKINNELL BECOMES PRESIDENT OF HOSPITAL PRODUCTS
 NEW YORK, Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- William C. Steere Jr., president and chief executive officer of Pfizer Inc (NYSE: PFE), today announced organization changes in the company's pharmaceuticals and hospital products groups to become effective Jan. 1:
 -- Edward C. Bessey, executive vice president, currently responsible for the hospital products and consumer products groups, will become president of Pfizer's U.S. pharmaceuticals business. He will retain responsibility for consumer products.
 -- Henry A. McKinnell, Ph.D., vice president-finance and chief financial officer, will become president of hospital products while continuing as chief financial officer.
 Bessey and McKinnell noted, "The continued growth of Howmedica, the divestiture of Pfizer Laser Systems and Deknatel, and the announced plans to divest the Shiley product line require a realignment of the remaining business and support staff of the hospital products group.
 "Howmedica has matured to the point where it is essentially a self- sufficient unit within HPG and will continue to operate under the leadership of David M. Fitzgerald, president of Howmedica and executive vice president of HPG. Effective Jan. 1, the remaining business within HPG will be named the medical devices division of HPG. Gerald H. Schulze has been appointed executive vice president, HPG, and president, medical devices." Fitzgerald and Schulze will report to McKinnell.
 McKinnell also announced the appointment of David L. Shedlarz, now vice president-finance for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, to vice president- finance of Pfizer Inc with responsibility for the tax, treasurers and controller functions.
 Steere announced the election of seven additional corporate officers. In addition to Fitzgerald, Schulze and Shedlarz, they are:
 -- Brian W. Barrett, president, Asia/Canada, Pfizer International.
 -- Gary N. Jortner, vice president and general manager, Pfizer Labs.
 -- Karen L. Katen, vice president and general manager, Roerig.
 -- Victor P. Micati, president, Europe, Pfizer International.
 Bessey holds an M.B.A. from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth University. He joined Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in 1964 and became head of Pfizer Labs in 1972. In 1977, he moved to Brussels as executive vice president of Pfizer Europe and returned to New York in 1980 as executive vice president of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. In 1982 he was elected a corporate officer of Pfizer Inc and was appointed president of what is now the hospital products group. Bessey was elected to the board of directors in 1987 and a senior vice president of the company in 1989. Earlier this year he was elected executive vice president of Pfizer Inc and given added responsibility for consumer products.
 McKinnell holds a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of British Columbia as well as M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. He joined Pfizer in 1971 as an assistant to the president of Pfizer Taito, the company's Japanese subsidiary. He was country manager, Iran/Afghanistan, from 1973 to 1977 before serving successively as vice president-area manager, executive vice president, and president of Pfizer Asia in Hong Kong. He was appointed vice president of strategic planning in 1984 and elected a corporate officer in 1986. He was elected vice president-finance and chief financial officer in 1990 and was named to the corporate management committee earlier this year.
 Schulze holds a B.A. in history from Dartmouth and an M.B.A. from the Amos Tuck School. He joined Roerig in 1971 and served in marketing assignments for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and Pfizer International. Named vice president-business development for consumer products in 1985, he became vice president-business development for hospital products in 1987 and senior vice president for HPG a year later.
 Shedlarz holds a B.S. in economics/mathematics from Michigan State and an M.B.A. from New York University. He joined Pfizer in 1976 as a senior financial analyst in Pfizer Pharmaceuticals where he also served in production and as vice president and group controller. He was named vice president-finance for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in 1989.
