PHOENIX, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- PETsMART Inc. announced today that it has set a 1994 goal of reducing the homeless pet population in the country by 50,000 via adoptions generated by its Luv A Pet program. In order to meet that goal, PETsMART needs animal shelters across the country to sign up for the program.
"There are far too many unwanted animals in this country," Mark Hansen, president of PETsMART said. "That's why we've dedicated prime selling space in every PETsMART store to accommodate pet adoption centers."
Luv A Pet adoption center program allows local animal shelters to reach more consumers by operating out of PETsMART locations. "In fact, some shelters have been able to double their adoptions by participating in the Luv A Pet centers program," Hansen said.
As an added incentive, every 1,000th pet adopted will receive $1,000 worth of food and supplies, one year's veterinary and grooming services, and obedience training courtesy of PETsMART.
Consumer response to the Luv A Pet centers program has been very positive. The program began in 1992 and more than 3,000 pet adoptions were arranged that first year. So far in 1993, more than 10,000 homeless pets have found new homes. The opening of 39 new PETsMART stores by the end of 1993 is helping fuel the dramatic increase in adoptions this year and more than 40 stores are scheduled to open in 1994 making the 50,000 goals a realistic possibility.
"PETsMART strongly believes in the local animal shelter system and has donated approximately $2 million toward assisting nearly 100 responsible pet adoption programs in 1993," Hansen said. "Instead of adding to the pet overpopulation program by selling dogs and cats at our stores, we're committed to help reducing the number of stray animals through Luv A Pet and other animal shelter support programs."
To qualify for the Luv A Pet adoption centers program, animal shelters must be a nonprofit 501C3 corporation and be active in the local community. Shelters are approved on a first come, first served basis. Organizations that would like to get involved in the Luv A Pet adoption centers program should call Sara Stredney at 800-899-PETS, Ext. 2111.
PETsMART, headquartered in Phoenix, is one of the nation's leading pet food and supply retailers. By the end of 1994, PETsMART plans to have Luv A Pet centers operating in all of its locations.
