PETTY ENTERPRISES, FIRST BRANDS NAME RICK WILSON
AS NEW STP/PONTIAC DRIVER FOR '93 NASCAR SEASON
ATLANTA, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Petty Enterprises and First Brands Corporation announced today during a press conference at the Atlanta Motor Speedway that Rick Wilson, a 12-year NASCAR Winston Cup veteran, will replace Richard Petty as the driver of the STP/Pontiac on the Winston Cup circuit in 1993.
The announcement was made by Richard Petty and R.J. "Rick" Bowen, vice president, automotive products division of First Brands, parent company of STP(R). It comes four days before Petty completes his 35- year legendary driving career here at the Hooter's 500 on Nov. 15.
"Rick Wilson will make us all proud," Petty said during the announcement. "I have a lot of respect for him and I believe we'll be much more competitive in '93 than in the past. Our car performed much stronger this past season than the results show."
Commenting on the announcement, Bowen said: "We're very pleased with Rick Wilson being chosen as the new STP/Pontiac driver. He'll make a fine spokesman for us and a great addition to the long list of STP motorsports champions. First Brands is looking forward to the additional competitive spirit Rick Wilson will bring to the team."
According to the announcement, Wilson began his NASCAR Winston Cup career in 1980 as an independent driver/owner. Since then he has driven for several teams, including Wawak-Ellington, Morgan-McClure, Ramoc, and the Stavola Brothers. He entered the '92 season with 173 NASCAR Winston Cup starts; 22 top 10 finishes, and more than $1.2 million in career earnings. He ran one Winston Cup event in 1992, the Daytona 500 by STP, before sponsorship problems forced the Stavola team to revise its racing program.
"Succeeding Richard Petty is both a dream and a challenge," the 39- year-old Wilson said. "Nobody can ever completely replace a legend like Richard, but I intend to give it my best shot and hope everyone will give me a chance to show what I can do. I greatly appreciate this chance of a lifetime."
Rick Wilson resides in Bartow, Fla., with his wife, Teresa, 9-year- old son, Travis, and 4-year-old daughter, Lori Ann.
First Brands Corporation (NYSE: FBR), Danbury, Conn., is the maker of STP, Prestone(R) and Simoniz(R) automotive products, Scoop-Away(R) Cat Litter, and Glad(R) and Glad-Lock(R) Wrap and Bags.
