PETROLEUM DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION SELECTED AS A 'BLUE CHIP ENTERPRISE'

 BRIDGEPORT, W.Va., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Petroleum Development Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: PETD) has been selected West Virginia's top state designee to be presented with the Blue Chip Enterprise Award for 1992.
 The Blue Chip Enterprise Award, as part of the Blue Chip Initiative, is presented by Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and Nation's Business magazine to companies which have demonstrated creative use of resources and innovation to meet challenges. The Blue Chip Enterprise Initiative, which was started in 1990, is a program designed to help small businesses by creating a network to share strategies for success. Over the past two years more than 900 Chambers of Commerce and 200 experts in government and academia have joined together to support the Blue Chip Enterprise Initiative.
 Petroleum Development Corporation, a leading Appalachian independent oil and gas company, is headquartered in Bridgeport, and is engaged in the business of exploring for, developing and producing oil and natural gas. The company drilled 80 wells in West Virginia during 1992, over 10 percent of the total wells drilled in the state during the year. The company currently operates over 700 wells.
 The resource management insights provided by Petroleum Development Corporation and nearly 200 other Blue Chip Enterprises from every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico will be shared with other small businesses in several ways:
 -- Profiles of the top state designees on "First Business," a half-hour, small business morning newscast on the USA Network;
 -- A video library, featuring Blue Chip Enterprise case studies entitled "Real-World Lessons for America's Small Businesses"; and
 -- A companion book profiling all the regional Blue Chip Enterprises and their strategies for success.
 "It is a small business that will lead the recovery of our nation's economy," said Denis F. Mullane, president and CEO of Connecticut Mutual. "That's exactly what is happening -- small businesses are growing. We see these businesses as the new Blue Chip' companies, and we are proud to support them."
 Richard Lesher, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said, "We're proud to be part of a program that helps businesses help themselves and their peers by sharing the experiences of those who have succeeded in almost every segment of the economy."
