PETER DAKS NAMED IABC EXCEL WINNER
TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Peter A. Daks, regional vice

president-general manager of GTE Florida, is the recipient of the 1992 EXCEL Award, presented by the Suncoast Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators. He was honored at a luncheon on Oct. 22 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Tampa.
EXCEL stands for Excellence in Communications Leadership, and it is the highest honor IABC bestows on a nonmember. This is the first year for the local award program, although the international IABC organization has sponsored a similar program since 1961.
Daks earned this prestigious award for his exceptional management of employee communication during a time of significant changes at GTE. He directed the company as it began transforming the internal corporate culture from functioning in a regulated, monopolistic environment to a more competitive, open marketplace.
Among his achievements was a training program on customer sensitivity. He also enabled employees to improve their skills to help usher in the new dynamics.
Daks began his GTE career in 1979 as manager of system development at GTE Products Corporation. In 1983 he was named information management director with GTE Southeast in Durham, N.C., and was promoted to vice president of information management two years later. He was then named assistant vice president of business systems planning at GTE Service Corporation in Stamford, Conn. Prior to assuming his present position, he was vice president of information management.
Currently a member of the board of trustees of the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Daks is a member of the board of governors and chairman of the communications board of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, he serves on the board of the Children's Home Society of Florida and on the board of the United Way.
IABC is a worldwide professional organization of 11,500 members in nearly 40 countries. Members are dedicated to fostering communication excellence and contributing more effectively to organizational goals. The Tampa Bay area chapter has more than 100 members.
