PETER A. DAKS APPOINTED TO HEAD NEWLY ESTABLISHED FLORIDA STATE OPERATIONS FOR GTE TELEPHONE OPERATIONS

 TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Peter A. Daks has been named president of the newly established Florida State Operations for GTE Telephone Operations. The announcement was made by Michael B. Esstman, GTE Telephone Operations executive vice president -- Operations. The appointment is effective immediately.
 Since 1990, Daks has served in Tampa as vice president-general manager for the Florida region of GTE Telephone Operations.
 "GTE recently realigned its Telephone Operations organization to bring a stronger market focus to our key market areas, and Florida certainly is one of those key markets," Esstman said. "The naming today of Pete Daks to serve as president of our Florida State Operations is further evidence of our commitment to meet thik?et's unique needs."
 As President of Florida State Operations, Daks will have a primary responsibility for overseeing all service-provisioning activities in the state. "For the past three years, as Florida Region vice president- general manager, Pete has been a strong advocate for employee empowerment training, which has played a critical role in producing performance results that are among the best in the entire telecommunications industry," Esstman said. "His familiarity with our operations in Florida, which is the second-largest market area in GTE's domestic telephone operations, is a tremendous asset. In addition, Pete's previous assignments with GTE have allowed him to gain a unique combination of leadership skills, experience and expertise that will serve our Florida customers well."
 Daks, who joined GTE in 1979 as a systems development manager in Camillus, N.Y., advanced through a number of information-technology positions before being named vice president -- Information Management in 1986 for GTE South in Durham, N.C.
 The following year, Daks was named assistant vice president -- Business Systems Planning for GTE Service Corporation in Stamford, Conn. In 1988, he was named vice president -- Information Management for GTE Telephone Operations in Irving, Texas.
 Daks holds a master's degree in Business Administration from Wake Forest University.
 GTE Florida, Inc., provides local voice and data telecommunications services to customers through approximately 1.9 million access lines in Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties.
