PETE SAMPRAS RENEWS SPONSORSHIP AGREEMENT WITH MITSUBISHI MOTORS
CYPRESS, Calif., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Pete Sampras, the youngest men's champion in the history of the U.S. Open, has renewed a one-year sponsorship contract with Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. (MMSA), the U.S. distributor of Mitsubishi motor vehicles.
"We're thrilled to continue our support of Pete, who is not only one of the game's fiercest competitors, but also one of its finest sportsmen," said Rick Lepley, senior vice president of sales and marketing for MMSA.
"Supportive sponsors like Mitsubishi Motors allows me to focus more on my performance," said Sampras, "I'm proud to represent a company like Mitsubishi Motors, which is committed to quality, as well as strong performance, across a full product line."
Sampras' sponsorship arrangement grants MMSA the rights to utilize the athlete in all forms of advertising, promotions and sales materials. The agreement also entitles MMSA to use Sampras for commercial shoots, company events or special clinics. In exchange, Sampras will wear the Mitsubishi Motors patch whenever he plays tennis.
Although Sampras is a relative newcomer to the international tennis circuit, he is ranked No. 3 in the world and has beaten such seasoned professionals as Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Boris Becker and top-ranked Jim Courier.
In 1990, Sampras made his international debut by capturing the men's title at the U.S. Open. Since then, his blistering serve and hard-charging playing style have earned him victories at the Thriftway ATP Championship, the U.S. Hardcourt Championships in Indianapolis, the Volvo Tennis/Los Angeles Tournament and the U.S. Pro Indoor Championships in 1991.
Yesterday, the 21-year-old who currently resides in Bradenton, Fla., made his way into the semi-finals of the U.S. Open and will be battling for his second Open title in Flushing Meadow, N.Y.
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. was established in 1982 by Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Tokyo, and markets a full line of subcompacts, compacts, sports coupes, grand touring sports cars, luxury performance sedans, sport wagons, light trucks and sport/utility vehicles.
