PET Ignition Coil Takes Charge.

Used for injection molded components in the Pro Mag ignition coil from MSD Ignition, DuPont's Rynite PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is demonstrating that thermoplastics need not be limited to use in low- and medium-voltage parts, DuPont Engineering Polymers says.

The Pro Mag coil puts out up to 50,000 volts as it helps propel nitro-fueled drag racers to 330 mph from a standing start on a quarter-mile strip, says DuPont. And according to MSD Ignition, the coil's test performance shows even greater capability: in limit testing, coils made with Rynite put out up to 65,000 volts in an open circuit with no arcing or other problems.

The coil has two bobbins injection molded from Rynite grade FR946, and a bright red housing molded from Rynite FR530. The bobbin for the primary winding is a simple thin-wall design; that for the secondary windings, which generate high-voltage output, is a complex unit with ten winding segments. The use of Rynite for these components is said to deliver "substantial" cost savings.

The Rynite FR946 grade used in the bobbins maintains excellent dielectric strength at the elevated temperatures sometimes produced for short periods in high-voltage situations. At 150[degrees]C, samples of 1.59-mm-thick disks molded from this grade tested according to ASTM D149 retain almost 90% of the dielectric strength they exhibit at room temperature, DuPont reports.
