Publishers: In Kansas, Lou Heldman has been named president and publisher of the Wichita Eagle, as of Jan. 1. Heldman will be moving from State College, Pa., where he has been publisher of the Centre Daily Times since 1996. Previously he was executive editor of the Tallahassee Democrat in Florida from 1991 to 1996. Before that he served at Knight Ridder corporate headquarters, and worked at the Miami Herald, the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel in Indiana and the Detroit Free Press. ... In Minnesota, Harold Higgins has been named president and publisher of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Higgins moves from San Luis Obispo, Calif., where he had been publisher of The Tribune since 1998. Previously Higgins was publisher of the Daily Camera in Boulder, Colo., from 1992 to 1998. He was editor, then publisher, of the Aberdeen American News in South Dakota from 1986 to 1992. ...

Executive offices: In Georgia, Tim Hart has been named director of business development for Cox Interactive Media of Atlanta. Hart had been director of customer acquisition for, and held posts at BellSouth; from 1990 to 1997, he was an advertising account executive at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. ... In Washington, D.C., Ann McDaniel has been elected vice president for human resources of the Washington Post Co. McDaniel, who had been director of human resources since January, previously worked for Newsweek magazine for 17 years, including as managing editor. In her new job she will oversee operations of The Gazette, a Post Co. subsidiary which publishes community papers in Maryland, and Post Newsweek Tech Media Group, publishers of trade periodicals and sponsors of trade shows. ... In New Jersey, Edward Melando has been promoted to vice president and corporate controller of Journal Register Co. of Trenton. Before joining the company in August 2000 as controller, Melando worked for 17 years for Asarco Inc., a multinational company based in New York. ... In Virginia, Kenneth Rhoades has been installed as president of the National Newspaper Association (NNA), the trade group for community newspapers based in Arlington. Rhoades is co-publisher of Enterprise Publishing Corp. in Blair, Neb. The NNA will elect other officers for 2001-02 at a special meeting Nov. 3 in Denver; the group's annual conference, scheduled for Sept. 12-15 in Milwaukee, was canceled as a result of the attacks of Sept. 11. ...

Newsroom names: In Illinois, Vickie Walton-James has been named associate managing editor of Washington news for the Chicago Tribune. Walton-James rises to Washington bureau chief after 12 years with the Tribune, including the last six as deputy bureau chief. Before that she worked in the Chicago newsroom as a copy editor, on the foreign desk and as the Sunday foreign and national editor. She succeeds James Warren, who recently became deputy managing editor for features...

Errors and omissions: The name of Craig Besant, director of recruitment category for Tribune Co. of Chicago, was misspelled in the Sept. 10, 2001, issue of NewsInc. In the Sept. 24, 2001, issue, John Sturm was incorrectly identified as chairman of the Newspaper Association of America. He is president and chief executive officer.
