 PERSHING NAMED VICE PRESIDENT AT SOUTHERN ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL
 ATLANTA, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Richard J. Pershing -- who has served as vice president for human resources at Georgia Power -- has been elected vice president of Southern Electric International, Inc., of Atlanta, with responsibilities for developing business opportunities in the international market.
 Southern Electric International -- a subsidiary of The Southern Company (NYSE: SO) -- designs, builds, owns and operates power production facilities and provides a broad range of technical services to industrial companies and utilities in the U.S. and international markets.
 The Southern Company is also the parent firm of five electric utilities: Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power and Savannah Electric. Together, these companies make up one of the largest investor-owned electric utility groups in the United States.
 Pershing, 45, has more than 20 years of financial and management experience in the energy field. He began his career in 1972 as an accountant in Georgia Power's Valdosta district. He advanced through several positions in the company's financial departments and served as Georgia Power's vice president and treasurer before becoming vice president for human resources in 1991.
 Pershing, a resident of Roswell, Ga., earned a bachelor's and master's degree in business administration-finance from Georgia State University. He also attended Emory University's advanced management program and the corporate financial management program at Harvard University.
 He is a member of the Edison Electric Institute, the Southeastern Electric Exchange's employee relations and personnel administration committee, the Atlanta Healthcare Alliance Board, and the SilverStriders of Georgia board. In addition, he is a past member of the National Association of Corporate Treasurers, the Financial Management Association, and the Financial Executives Institute.
