PERRY POWER PLANT SHUTS DOWN

 PERRY POWER PLANT SHUTS DOWN
NORTH PERRY, Ohio, Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Operators at the Perry

Power Plant shut down the plant around 2:00 a.m. today after a 36-inch fiberglass pipe broke.
The pipe carries non-radioactive water from the cooling tower to the plant. Loss of this pipe required shut down of the plant, which was safely achieved. The broken pipe flooded several manholes around the plant but did not damage plant equipment. Repair of the water pipe is expected to take several days. The flooding did cause some floor drains to back up within the plant, resulting in minor radioactive contamination around those drains.
In accordance with plant procedures and federal regulations, plant personnel declared an Alert at 2:59 a.m., due to water in the manholes. An Alert is the second lowest of four emergency classifications as outlined by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. All appropriate government agencies were notified of the situation.
The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company operates the Perry Power Plant for a consortium of five electric utilities.
