PERKINS COIE OPENS AN OFFICE IN HONG KONG, ITS SECOND IN ASIA, TO SERVE CLIENTS THROUGHOUT ASIA AND THE PACIFIC RIM

SEATTLE, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Perkins Coie, the largest law firm in the Pacific Northwest, today announced that it has formally established an office in Hong Kong.
"Our new Hong Kong office gives us a presence in what many people believe is the business and financial heart of Asia," said Perkins Coie's managing partner Robert Giles. "The city is perfectly positioned to provide access to markets both in mainland China and throughout Asia, and we believe that clients doing business in Asia will benefit from our commitment to the region."
This is the second office in Asia that Perkins Coie has opened in less than a year. Last May, Perkins Coie established an office in Taipei, Taiwan, becoming the first Pacific Northwest-headquartered firm with a full-service legal office in the Republic of China.
Perkins Coie's Hong Kong office complements the firm's Taiwan operations, providing clients access to a full range of international legal services, Giles said. Clients of the Hong Kong office will be able to call directly upon the diverse talents of attorneys with decades of experience in sophisticated international and cross-border legal matters involving businesses and individuals. Because of the firm's state-of-the-art computer and data systems, clients in Hong Kong also will be able to call upon Perkins Coie attorneys and staff in any of the firm's eight other offices.
"Establishing an office in Hong Kong makes sense now," Giles said. "Asia is home to the fastest growing economies in the world. We believe the region will continue to be economically vibrant for years to come, and that as its economies expand our clients will need sophisticated legal services."
Perkins Coie's Hong Kong office will be headed by resident partner Robert Mucklestone and partner Michael McGowen.
Mucklestone is a senior Perkins Coie partner with extensive experience doing estate, trust and personal planning work for individuals residing in the United States and Asia.
Hong Kong's transfer to the People's Republic of China in 1997 will create new and exciting legal challenges for clients doing business in Asia, Mucklestone notes. "The changes in 1997 will give Perkins Coie additional opportunities to assist clients and to help them prepare for new political and economic conditions as we enter the 21st century," he said.
McGowen came to Perkins Coie in early 1993 from the Hong Kong office of Chicago-headquartered Baker & McKenzie. He focuses his practice on arranging real estate development projects throughout Asia. Regional development projects and investment opportunities thrive in today's Asian business climate, McGowen notes. "Clients are interested in diversifying their holdings throughout the region."
The Hong Kong office also expands Perkins Coie's ability to fully serve the legal needs of clients throughout mainland China. Since the firm's Taipei office opened last year, Perkins Coie has handled increasing amounts of mainland-related work for Taiwan clients, and the new office in Hong Kong allows the firm to fully serve those and other clients with legal needs on the mainland and throughout Asia.
Founded in Seattle in 1912, Perkins Coie has U.S. offices in each West Coast state and the District of Columbia. Worldwide, the firm has more than 325 lawyers in Seattle, Spokane and Bellevue, Washington; Portland, Oregon; Anchorage, Alaska; Los Angeles; Washington, D.C.; Hong Kong and Taipei. In addition to those offices, Perkins Coie serves clients through its extensive network of international cooperating counsel, which has enabled the firm to complete transactions in more than 90 countries.
