Springfield arts high school stages Shakespeare parody

See all of Shakespeare in a single hilarious sitting next week when three young actors from Springfield's Academy of Arts and Academics perform "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare ... Abridged."

The fast-moving parody compresses all 37 William Shakespeare plays into a single show that lasts about an hour and a half.

The popular play was created by Reduced Shakespeare Company and was first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1987.

The Academy of Arts and Academics production will be performed at Lord Leebrick Theatre, 540 Charnelton St., at 7 p.m. Sunday, and then at Amazon Park, 2700 Hilyard St., at 6 p.m. Tuesday. It stars Ian Boyd, Dustin Freechild and Patrick Curzon.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $5 to $10 per person. The show is a benefit to help send Academy of Arts and Academics students to the Fringe Festival next summer.

Native American storyteller to perform at Springfield library

SPRINGFIELD - The Springfield Public Library, 225 Fifth St., presents Native American storyteller Esther Stutzman at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

She will be accompanied on drum by her daughter Shannin Stutzman.

Esther Stutzman said she learned the stories from her grandmother, who was more than 100 years old when she died. Her family was very traditional, she said, and kept the knowledge of the old ways.

Her heritage is Yoncalla-Kalapuya and Coos, and she is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz. She lives in Yoncalla and has worked in schools for more than 30 years doing programs in storytelling, music and dance.

All ages are welcome. The event will be held in the Library Meeting Room. Admission is free and sponsored by the Oregon Historical Society.
