Semiconductor Corp. has introduced two new 16Kx16 SRAMs: the P4C214 and P4C218. They are used for cache memory applications with Intel iX86 and MIPS R3000A & R4000 series microprocessors at frequencies up to 50 MHz.
 Both the P4C214 and P4C218 have on-chip transparent latches for the address inputs, making them particularly suited for systems with multiplexed address and data buses. They are available at speeds of 13, 15, 20 and 25 nanoseconds in 52-pin PLCC packages. Sample quantities of the P4C214 and P4C218 are now available at all speeds, and production quantities are available with 8-week lead times.
 3.3V versions of these products, P3C214 and P3C218, will be available with similar access times later this year, with production quantities available in Q1, 1993. The power dissipation with a 3.3V power supply is reduced by 40 percent compared to the 5V counterparts.
 The P4C214 is a package-and-pin-compatible upgrade of the 8Kx16 latched SRAM that is used in the PC industry. To address the increased depth of this 16Kx16 SRAM, an extra address pin replaces a No Connect (NC) pin on the 52-pin PLCC package. Cache size can be doubled in the same board space with minimum board change. A MODE input pin permits use of the P4C214 as a Direct-Mapped cache (all 14 address bits latched) or a 2-way Set-Associative cache (only high order 13 address bits latched). For smaller caches multiway associativity increases system performance.
 The P4C218 has additional on-chip transparent latches for the input data and is fully compatible with similar products from Micron (MT5C2516) and Motorola (MCM62995). This product also offers low power standby mode when deselected, making it suitable for low-cost secondary caches.
 In systems with a 16-bit bus and larger, the P4C214 and P4C218 can also be used as wide-word, general-purpose memory. For example, each part forms a single-chip program/data memory for 16-bit DSPs and embedded controllers (M56000, i80196).
