PEREGRINE SYSTEMS' IPAS INTEGRATES UNIX NETWORK MANAGEMENT PLATFORMS WITH PNMS

IPAS Automatically Populates the PNMS Inventory Database to
Reflect the Current TCP/IP Networked Device Configuration
and Automatically Opens and Updates Problem Tickets
CARLSBAD, Calif., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Peregrine Systems Inc., today announced a new software product that complements its integrated enterprise network management strategy. IPAS provides a seamless interface from platforms such as HP OpenView to the Peregrine Network Management System (PNMS) allowing help desk and support personnel to manage heterogeneous networks from one consolidated environment. IPAS integrates TCP/IP network platform managers with PNMS.
PNMS is Peregrine's flagship product consisting of network administrative applications that automate problem, change, inventory/configuration, and financial management of the enterprise. "IPAS notifies network administrators whenever there is a change in the network configuration and automatically updates the database so they may never have to take a physical inventory again," says Jim Butler, president, Peregrine Systems.
Accurate inventory information is crucial to successful problem management. For example, if a user reports a problem with a new workstation before it is entered into the support database, there is no way for support staff to address the problem without sending someone to the site to investigate. IPAS solves this problem by automating the process.
IPAS automatically populates the PNMS inventory database with the device name, type, vendor, IP address, adapter address, relational information, and object description for each connected device. Relevant MIB II data or management platform data stored in the object database is also relayed to PNMS applications.
In addition to managing the inventory, IPAS automatically opens and updates problem tickets based on SNMP trap information and provides data for the associated device. IPAS allows users to go directly from their network management platform (i.e. OpenView) to a PNMS window saving users' time by providing direct access to the desired PNMS application. IPAS updates the PNMS problem database in real time. "IPAS helps support staff operate proactively and focus on solving problems rather than finding and documenting them," says Butler.
COVER, another integrated PNMS solution, take information supplied to the PNMS database via IPAS and other Peregrine products and graphically depicts the relationship between the logical and physical heterogeneous network configuration. Together, these products let support staff actually see where trouble spots are occurring.
 Pricing and Availability
IPAS will be available from Peregrine Systems for PNMS Client/Server installations. The product is currently available for platforms running HP OpenView. Subsequent releases are planned for platforms running NetView/6000 and SunNet Manager in that order. IPAS pricing is calculated as a percentage of the PNMS base system server.
