PEREGRINE SYSTEMS' COVER VISUALLY INTEGRATES HETEROGENEOUS NETWORKS FOR CENTRALIZED MANAGEMENT

COVER Integrates Management Data from Disparate Networks so that
 Systems Administrators Can Graphically Navigate
 a Network's Real-Time Status and Configuration
CARLSBAD, Calif., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Peregrine Systems Inc. today announced a new software solution to complement its suite of enterprise network management products -- the Consolidated Object Visualizer for Enterprise Repositories (COVER). COVER provides a platform for network integration by facilitating heterogeneous proactive and reactive network management from a single platform.
COVER is a unique visualization tool that implements state-of-the- art geographic information system, computer-aided design, and three dimensional graphic technologies. COVER was designed to accelerate problem identification, resolution, and turnaround time to improve service-level performance and end-user satisfaction.
COVER works with the Peregrine Network Management System (PNMS) to provide an integrated approach to heterogeneous network management. PNMS administrative applications perform problem, change, inventory, and alert management on this data from disparate networks. This data is consolidated into the repository using other Peregrine software products. COVER processes this information to generate a thin object layer and produce a graphical representation enabling system administrators to rapidly respond to network outages.
For example, by clicking on a PC's icon in COVER, a user can see how the PC is connected to both a file server on a LAN and a mainframe on an SNA network. One can bring up a CAD drawing of a floor plan and see the office where the PC is located. And one can look at the inventory record, see a problem summary, or open a PNMS problem ticket on this PC -- all from the same database.
"COVER will significantly improve systems troubleshooting and end user satisfaction by reducing downtime," says Jim Butler, president of Peregrine Systems. "In fact, with COVER's proactive tools, its possible for a problem to be fixed before end users even know its exists."
"COVER is tightly integrated with PNMS administrative applications and provides a topological schema for integrating management data from disparate networks," says Joe Diamand, COVER product author. COVER consolidates command and control through integration with NetView and OpenView, provides graphical representations using 3D graphics, geographical maps, and CAD drawings. "Centralized command and control greatly enhances networked systems management," says Diamand.
 Pricing and Availability
COVER is currently available for the HP PA/RISC workstations. Availability for the Sun SPARC and ICM RS/6000 platforms is planned for the fourth quarter of 1993. COVER is a module of PNMS Client/Server. Pricing is calculated as a percentage of the PNMS base system server. COVER pricing begins at $14,400 for five concurrent users.
