PERCEPTRONICS AND ITS CACE SOFTWARE ON WINNING HUGHES PROGRAM TEAM
 FOR IMPROVING IRFPA MANUFACTURING PROCESSES
WOODLAND HILLS, Calif., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Perceptronics Inc. (NASDAQ: PERC) today announced that it is the team partner of Hughes Santa Barbara Research Center on a just-awarded program for research and development on improving manufacture of infrared focal plane array (IRFPA) products. IRFPAs are important sensor elements in many military imaging systems because they permit vision in the dark and through fog and sand.
Perceptronics' initial portion of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) contract is for approximately $500,000 over one year, and involves the use of Perceptronics' proprietary CACE software technology. The company will design and develop an end-to- end integrated process model encompassing the critical aspects of IRFPA fabrication, from raw materials to packaged products. The goal is to lower manufacturing costs, improve yield and performance, and allow new IRFPA configurations to be successfully produced with minimum process introduction time and expense.
Perceptronics anticipates negotiation of a subcontract with Hughes, including options in excess of $1 million, in the near future.
"This win is particularly significant for Perceptronics because it marks the first time our CACE process modeling software has been adopted by another company for use in its own semiconductor product manufacturing efforts." said Dr. Gershon Weltman, chairman and chief executive officer of Perceptronics.
"Hughes Santa Barbara Research Center is a world leader in the IRFPA field, and we are pleased that the innovative benefits of our CACE software will contribute to the success of this important program," Weltman said.
Perceptronics also announced that it has teamed with Hughes Santa Barbara Research Center on a potentially larger subsequent proposal for a multiyear IRFPA Flexible Manufacturing Program. This program focuses on innovative concepts for the affordable manufacture of IRFPA products for a wide variety of military applications and would apply the company's CACE developement management software to the IRFPA manufacturing process.
Weltman added: "CACE appears to be the right product at the right time. Industry needs software for managing and optimizing concurrent engineering, a newly emerging discipline, and our CACE tools meet that need. We are gratified that the benefits of our CACE software are being recognized so early in its lifecycle. We see a major growth opportunity for Perceptronics when CACE is fully implemented and marketed as a commercial product line."
Perceptronics' CACE software line was introduced in prototype form in June 1992 at the Design Automation Conference. Beta testing of the commercial product line is expected to begin in approximately six months.
Perceptronics is engaged in research and development and in the manufacture and marketing of computer-based simulation software and systems for commercial and military training and decision support.
