PERCEPTRON TO SUPPLY $2.1 MILLION IN P1000 SYSTEMS TO FORD

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Perceptron, Inc. (OTC: PRCP) announced today that it has received from Michigan-based Progressive Tool & Industries Co. (PICO), Key Welder Corporation and Weldmation Inc., purchase orders for five Perceptron 1000 laser sensor measuring systems totaling approximately $2,130,000. The systems are to be delivered to Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) over the next six months.
This Ford installation represents the largest single-plant concentration of Perceptron's equipment at Ford. In addition to Ford, Perceptron has supplied precision measuring systems to General Motors and Chrysler in North America as well as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Volvo in Europe.
The latest award follows a $1.6 million award from Fiat in Italy in November 1992 which points to a growing role for Perceptron's technology, according to Dwight Carlson, Perceptron's president and chief executive officer. "This is our largest installation to date at Ford, and it marks Perceptron's penetration into all Big 3 automotive companies in North America." Carlson added that "During November and December of 1992, we booked a total of $4.1 million as compared to $2.3 million during the comparable period in 1991."
Perceptron develops, manufactures and markets laser-based sensor and image-processing systems used in the production of large formed parts and assemblies such as cars, trucks and appliances. Using lasers and digital signal processing electronics, Perceptron's on-line systems make critical measurements as cars move along the production line. It takes only seconds to determine whether an individual body panel or car body meets design intent at the checkpoints being monitored.
Operating at full projected line speed, the Perceptron system can detect variation and deviations in production processes and help plant engineers correct them immediately so that quality standards are consistently met. Perceptron products are marketed in North America, Europe and Japan.
