PERCEPTRON, A LEADING 3-D IMAGING SOLUTIONS COMPANY, ANNOUNCES NEW LASER RADAR TECHNOLOGY ORDER

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Perceptron, Inc. (NASDAQ Small-Cap Market: PRCP) announced today that it has received a $300,000 purchase order to provide its LASAR(R) datacameras as part of a traffic monitoring system being developed by the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM). The system will provide data for traffic flow and event reconstruction analysis under an Intelligent Vehicle and Highway Systems (IVHS) contract from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The ERIM system will be able to track the position and heading of all vehicles on a stretch of highway about 200 yards long. It will utilize three Perceptron LASAR datacameras to provide high-resolution 3-D digital images of the scene at a rate of 10 per second.
"LASAR is the only commercially available system which can provide fast, high-resolution 3-D imagery over such long distances," said Dwight D. Carlson, president and CEO of Perceptron. "A variety of new customers are just beginning to discover the ways this technology can be put to work. Traffic event documentation and reconstruction is just one exciting new application for our LASAR products."
The trademark "LASAR" results from the use of lasers and radar. Until recently, laser radar technology, often called lidar or ladar, had been confined to military applications such as missile guidance and target recognition. "Laser radar technology is ideal for high- resolution 3-D imaging over long ranges," said Dwayne Carmer, ERIM project engineer. "For the traffic monitoring project, we turned to Perceptron because they have commercialized the technology and can provide the LASAR datacameras at an attractive price."
In operation, LASAR scans its field of view with a tightly focused, modulated laser beam. It uses the phase shift of reflected signals to compute distances to objects and surfaces in the scene. At a rate of 10 times per second, LASAR will generate a high-resolution 3-D digital image containing over 10,000 measurement points. LASAR has been recognized by the leading trade journal Photonics Spectra as a Product of the Year for 1992.
The datacameras are scheduled to be delivered to ERIM by the end of this year. ERIM will provide software which extracts vehicle positions and headings from these images and will install the system in early 1994. The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute will use the system to study traffic flow, reconstruct near-miss events, and evaluate the effects of various vehicle and highway safety systems.
Perceptron is a leading 3-D imaging solutions company which develops and markets non-contact measurement and guidance systems. Its laser- based datacameras, image-processing hardware and proprietary software are used in object recognition, measurement, guidance and inspection applications. Perceptron products are marketed in North America, Europe and Asia.
