PEPSI-COLA BECOMES 'TOTAL BEVERAGE COMPANY' Trade Customers and Consumers to Benefit

ATLANTA, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Reaching more Americans with more choices, Pepsi-Cola has added three new products to its traditional soft drink line-up to become positioned as a total beverage company.
According to Pepsi-Cola, the latest additions, Lipton Original teas, Ocean Spray juices and juice drinks, and H2Oh! sparkling water, answer a consumer demand for variety. With more than 17 beverage trademarks on its menu, the company ensures that the whole family of Pepsi-Cola products will remain competitively priced and convenient to purchase.
"By combining Pepsi's distribution system with such category leaders as Lipton and Ocean Spray," said Craig E. Weatherup, president and CEO of Pepsi-Cola North America, "we're creating a company that can't miss. Anytime a person reaches out for a beverage, we'll be there."
Bill Redmond, vice president, customer development, of the Pepsi-Cola Company, is heading up the sales and marketing of Pepsi-Cola's total beverage line in the southeast. He explained that the company's distribution system makes all Pepsi beverages more cost efficient and convenient for retailers in several ways. "Since Pepsi customer representatives fully merchandise our products in customer's outlets," Redmond said, "the facility owner is relieved of labor costs for stocking those shelves. The store owner who deals with one provider for all beverages significantly cuts down on time and paperwork.
"Pepsi-Cola has the resources to schedule store visits as often as every day, so the retailer never runs out of stock on Pepsi items," Redmond continued, "and consumers benefit from a total beverage company by having the assurance of quality on any Pepsi-Cola Company distributed beverage they purchase."
The "total beverage company" positioning began just over a year ago, when Pepsi-Cola created a joint venture with Thomas J. Lipton Company in December 1991 to develop and market new tea-based beverages for the U.S. consumer market and to expand distribution of existing Lipton ready-to- drink (RTD) products. In May 1992, the Pepsi-Lipton Tea Partnership unveiled Lipton Original, the nation's first all-natural, real-brewed, RTD iced tea. This product was available in Unsweetened No Lemon, Sweetened with Lemon, and Sweetened No Lemon flavors. By September 1992, two new flavor varieties, Raspberry and Peach iced teas, were introduced.
During 1992, Pepsi-Cola also began to distribute Ocean Spray juices and juice drinks, including Ocean Spray trademarks Cranapple, Cran- Grape, Cran-Raspberry, Cran-Strawberry, and Crantastic.
H2Oh! sparkling water has been in development since 1989, when it was test marketed in Denver and Minneapolis. H2Oh! is available in three flavors: Original, Berry and Lemon-Lime. The sparkling water has natural fruit flavors and contains no fructose or other sweeteners. It is also free of sodium and calories.
The Pepsi-Cola Company is headquartered in Somers, N.Y. The primary trademarks that Pepsi-Cola distributes in the United States are Pepsi and Caffeine Free Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Diet Mountain Dew, Slice, Crystal Pepsi, Diet Crystal Pepsi, Ocean Spray Juices and Juice Drinks, Lipton Original Teas and H2Oh! Sparkling Water.
