PEOPLES GAS: UNION REJECTS CONTRACT OFFER BY PEOPLES GAS

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of Local 666 of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) voted Thursday to reject a contract offer by company management of The Peoples Natural Gas Company, the company said today. Union employees are continuing to work under the existing contract, which expired Oct. 27.
The union represents 594 Peoples Gas employees or approximately half of the company's work force of 1,232.
According to Jim Flinn, vice president, human resources, the company offered bargaining unit members a 3.15 percent wage increase for each of the next three years. The proposal also included a new medical benefits package for bargaining unit members and future bargaining unit retirees.
"We have reached agreement on a number of issues; however, the two sides appear to be apart with regard to the medical benefits issue," said Flinn. "However, we're optimistic that a timely settlement can be reached."
Peoples Gas provides natural gas service to 313,531 residential, 22,297 commercial and 178 industrial customers in 16 counties throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.
