PEOPLE FOR THE AMERICAN WAY JOINS WITH TIME WARNER
 TO PROMOTE RACIAL HARMONY
LOS ANGELES, May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- People For the American Way, an organization defending constitutional liberties and civil rights, and Time Warner Inc., the world's leading media and entertainment company, have announced a joint program, "Racial Tolerance Mentoring Project," to promote racial tolerance among Los Angeles area youth. The program utilizes college and university students to lead classroom discussions about racial tolerance in high schools.
A generous grant for the project will be given by Time Warner to People For the American Way at a dinner tonight in Los Angeles honoring Quincy Jones for his contribution in promoting racial tolerance. The dinner will be co-chaired by Warner Bros. Chairman Bob Daly and Warner Bros. Records Chairman Mo Ostin.
In response to the recent crisis in Los Angeles, Time Warner and People For the American Way will expedite the implementation of the mentoring project. "We need to act now to address the racial tensions resulting form the Los Angeles violence and rebuild the spirit of community," said People For the American Way's President, Arthur J. Kropp. Los Angeles area university students will be recruited from local institutions including the Claremont Colleges, U.C.L.A. and U.S.C. A steering committee for the project is now being formed.
The Racial Tolerance Mentoring Project has been a successful pilot in North Carolina for the past two years. The project is part of People For the American Way's program to improve race relations and tolerance nationwide. The N.C. project, called NCSTAR, enlists and trains college students to lead probing discussions on tolerance and race in high schools. The North Carolina project involves students from colleges and universities including Duke, N.C. State, Wake Forrest, Greensboro College and others. It has reached thousands of high school students in school districts across the state.
In Los Angeles the partnership between students and faculty from area colleges will develop and implement the mentoring project. "This will give high school students a chance to air their feelings about racial issues and college youth a way to contribute," added Michael Hudson, People For the American Way vice president and the project coordinator.
People for the American Way is a 300,00-member non-partisan citizens organization with a long history of countering intolerance in our society. In March, People For released a major national study, "Democracy's Next Generation-II: A Study of American Youth on Race," exploring racial attitudes among youth.
