The dance world is bedecked with Guggenheim Fellows this year. Janice L. Ross, Dance Magazine correspondent and dance history lecturer at Stanford University, was one of two dance scholars to win. She'll use her fellowship to finish a biography of Anna Halprin. There were four choreography fellows, including Leigh Witchel, founder of Dance as Ever, a ballet company in Manhattan. He's the first classical ballet-maker to win in a decade ... Performance artist and choreographer John Kelly won a $50,000 CalArts/Alpert Award ... nicholasleichterdance in Manhattan received $25,000 from the Jerome Foundation to support new work. David Gordon's Pick Up Performance Company received $12,000 ... Garth Fagan won this year's $35,000 Samuel Scripps/American Dance Festival Award, which goes to modern dance choreographers for lifetime achievement ... He was previously with the Vienna State Opera Ballet ... Houston Ballet principal dancers Barbara Bears, Dawn Scannell, and Kathryn Warakomsky retired. Julie Gumbinner (who appeared on Dance Magazine's cover last December) and David Makhateli are now principals, and Tyann Clement, Fernando Moraga, Lucas Priolo, and Sara Webb have been promoted to soloist.
