PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE ISSUES TRAVEL ADVISORY

HARRISBURG, Pa., March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Due to the anticipated severe weather, including high winds and heavy snow, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is advising motorists across the state to use extreme caution when traveling the toll road this weekend.
The Turnpike Commission will do everything possible to keep the toll road open. All State Police, Safety and Maintenance personnel and equipment are prepared to go into action when the storm hits. However, if conditions warrant, it may be necessary to ban commercial vehicles in order to clear and remove snow and keep the road open.
Anyone who does not absolutely need to travel should not be on the road this weekend. If travel is essential, motorists and passengers should be certain to have all emergency provisions and medications on hand.
"Keeping the Turnpike open will require cooperation from everyone," said Turnpike Deputy Executive Director John Boschi who is in charge of personnel responsible for snow removal. "We are requesting commercial trucking companies to restrict non-essential travel and alert their drivers that the Pennsylvania Turnpike may be closed to commercial vehicles as the storm intensifies."
 Turnpike Travel Tips
Here are some precautions for drivers who may find it necessary to travel during the snow storm.
If your vehicle becomes disabled or you are stranded, stay in your vehicle until help arrives. If you are close to a call box, press the "service" button and return to your vehicle.
If possible, pull your car into a wide area or service plaza parking lot. Use the road shoulder only as a last resort, since the shoulder area must be available for snow removal operations.
If you continue to run your engine, open windows slightly to allow fresh air to enter. Do not operate engine if the rear of your vehicle is stuck in a snow drift.
Do not attempt to pass plow trains. It is best to stay behind and allow snow plows to do their job.
If your vehicle is disabled, you should raise the hood, place a white cloth either on the antenna or door handle, and remain with the vehicle until help arrives.
 Some additional safe-driver tips include:
-- clearing all vehicle windows prior to your trip
-- letting your vehicle warm up before beginning your journey
-- examining your windshield wipers to be sure they are in good shape
-- carrying a brush to clear your windows and a bottle of extra windshield washer fluid
-- carrying a flashlight with new batteries
-- carrying a portable fire extinguisher
 -- packing a blanket
-- equipping your vehicle with all-weather tires
-- carrying a spare tire in your trunk
 -- observing the speed limit
-- driving with lights on when visibility is poor
 -- maintaining adequate following distance
-- securing children safely in seat belts or child safety seats
