PENNSYLVANIA STEEL TECHNOLOGIES COMPLETES IMPROVEMENTS DESIGNED TO INCREASE THE QUALITY OF PRODUCTS COMING OFF ITS 20-INCH BAR MILL

STEELTON, Pa., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Looking for a heavier participation in the cold-drawn bar market, Pennsylvania Steel Technologies (PST) recently completed a number of improvements designed to increase the quality of products coming off its 20-inch bar mill, including the installation of a de-scaling facility to vastly improve bar surface quality, the company announced today.
PST's mill produces both bar flats and special sections and has the distinction of manufacturing the largest square edge flats available in this country. Primary applications for the mill's products are in the manufacture of heavy equipment and machinery and for components used in railroad maintenance and construction.
"The installation of our new high-pressure de-scaling unit, which removes both primary and secondary scale, opens new areas of the bar market because of our vastly improved surface quality," said Andrew R. Futchko, PST's president.
In addition to the de-scaling equipment, Futchko said other improvements have been made to the 20-inch mill to enhance the squareness of corners and the flatness of the edges of the bar products, both critical in cold-drawing.
As for the future, Futchko said the central Pennsylvania corporation is studying the potential of expanding into additional markets and expects to make decisions soon on further capital investments to its 20-inch mill.
Futchko said that market acceptance of PST's new and expanded bar product line has been "excellent."
PST, a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corporation (NYSE: BS), produces bars in thicknesses from 1/2 inch through 4 inches and in widths from 4 inches through 14 inches, in both carbon and alloy grades.
