PENNSYLVANIA POWER AND LIGHT CO. REPORTS FIRST QUARTER EARNINGS

HARRISBURG, Pa., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. (NYSE: PPL) (PP&L) reported today earnings of $2.04 per share of common stock for the 12-month period ended March 31, 1993, compared with earnings of $2.03 per share for the same period the year before.
Energy sales to service-area customers increased 713 million kilowatt-hours, or 2.4 percent, over the previous 12-month period.
"We're encouraged by the improvement in the economy of Central Eastern Pennsylvania," said Charles E. Russoli, PP&L's executive vice president and chief financial officer. "This improvement is reflected in our improving electricity sales."
PP&L continued to make progress in controlling its operating and maintenance expenses, Russoli said. "Managing expenses is an important component in our goal to postpone any base rate increase as long as possible," Russoli said.
For the first quarter of 1993, PP&L reported earnings of 70 cents per common share, up from 68 cents in the comparable period the year before. The earnings-per-share amounts have been adjusted to reflect the results of the two-for-one common stock split approved by shareowners April 22, 1992.
