PENNSYLVANIA POWER & LIGHT CO. REPORTS SECOND-QUARTER EARNINGS

ALLENTOWN, Pa., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. (NYSE: PPL) (PP&L) today reported earnings of $2.04 per share of common stock for the 12 month period ended June 30, 1993, up from $2.02 per share in the same period the year before.
Energy sales to service-area customers increased 2.7 percent, or 787 million kilowatt-hours, over the previous 12-month period.
"Industrial sales have been increasing steadily," said Charles E. Russoli, PP&L's executive vice president and chief financial officer. "They're up by 3.8 percent in the 12-month period over the previous year. That's an encouraging sign of an improving economy in our service territory."
Russoli noted that sales increased in all major customer groups during the period. Residential sales were up 2 percent and commercial sales rose 2.3 percent, he said.
PP&L's earnings performance reflects the increased sales, on-going efforts to control operating and maintenance expenses and continued refinancing of higher-cost securities to take advantage of favorable market conditions, Russoli said.
For the second quarter of 1993, PP&L reported earnings of 40 cents a common share, up from 39 cents in the comparable 1992 period.
