PENNSYLVANIA GOV. CASEY SIGNS COMMODITY MARKETING LEGISLATION
HARRISBURG, Pa., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Gov. Robert P. Casey today signed legislation changing the number of votes required to approve a review referendum under the state's Agricultural Commodity Marketing Act.
The legislation, House Bill 401, changes the number of votes needed to approve a referendum from two-thirds to a simple majority of producers voting.
Under the Commodity Marketing Act, producers of the same commodity may jointly provide funds for research, promotion and education activities. After five years of operation, producers must vote to continue the marketing program through a review referendum.
There are currently six marketing programs serving the dairy, apple, potato, vegetable, peach and nectarine, and sheep and lamb industries.
In a survey conducted by the Agriculture Department two years ago, producers from each of the six existing programs supported the change from the two-thirds requirement to a simple majority.
The law takes effect in 60 days.
