PENNSYLVANIA FEDERATION OF THE BROTHERHOOD OF MAINTENANCE
OF WAY EMPLOYES CHAIRMAN ISSUES STATEMENT ON RAIL NEGOTIATIONS
WASHINGTON, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Jed Dodd, general chairman of the Pennsylvania Federation of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes and the union's chief negotiator, issued the following statement:
We continue to negotiate with both Amtrak and Conrail, and we will continue to do so until at least midnight tomorrow night. We have been bargaining for four years with Conrail and Amtrak, trying to reach a reasonable settlement, but the carriers seem to be more interested in manipulating the process in an effort to drag Congress into the matter to impose a settlement.
We cannot accept wage and work rule packages that further deteriorate our standard of living and further brutalize already tough and dangerous working conditions while Amtrak enjoys record passenger traffic and Conrail posts record profits. We want the public to know that if a strike occurs it will only happen after all other alternatives have been exhausted.
