PENNSYLVANIA ATTORNEY GENERAL SUES PET INC.

PHILADELPHIA, April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Attorney General Ernie Preate announced today that his office was filing suit against the sale of Whitman's Chocolates by its parent company Pet Inc. to Russell Stover Candies, Whitman's sole national competitor.
The suit, brought under the federal anti-trust laws, seeks immediate relief to secure Whitman's assets while the case is pending.
"I believe that this action will maintain fair competition in the gift boxed chocolate market and protect the commonwealth's consumers," commented Preate. "In addition, this action will enhance the prospects for keeping Whitman's Chocolates and its jobs in Philadelphia."
The date for the first hearing is April 26.
Joe Rauscher, president of Local 6 of the Bakery, Confectionery and Tobacco Workers Union, which represents the Whitman workers, said he was delighted by the attorney general's action. "Attorney General Preate recognized the inherent unfairness of Pet's decision to sell Whitman's to its only competition."
The announcement came at the noontime kickoff of a regional campaign to boycott Russell Stover and Pet Inc. products to stop the sale and subsequent closure of Whitman's Chocolates. The kickoff was held at Philadelphia City Hall and included Preate, U.S. Reps. Lucien Blackwell and Bob Borski, and a majority of the area's state senators and state representatives, plus the bulk of the City Council. This bipartisan group was joined by community and religious leaders.
"I believe that with this type of political support and the help of the entire Delaware Valley community, we will quickly go through the 250,000 pledge cards we have had printed," remarked Rauscher.
In addition to community groups and other union members, Local 6 members from Whitman's will be traveling throughout southeastern Pennsylvania asking consumers to join the boycott.
