PENNDOT ISSUES TRAFFIC ALERT

 PENNDOT ISSUES TRAFFIC ALERT
PITTSBURGH, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Department of

Transportation (PennDOT) today issued the following traffic alert.
-- White Swan Interchange/Airport Parkway/Pennsylvania Route 60 - Moon and Findlay townships, Allegheny County:
Over the next two weeks, traffic will be restricted during non- peak periods on the Airport Parkway west of the Montour Run Interchange as a result of the ongoing construction for the White Swan Interchange. The interchange will eventually connect the Airport Parkway with the Southern Expressway leading to the new Midfield Terminal at Greater Pittsburgh International Airport.
The construction contractor, Dick Enterprises, will be paving and shifting traffic in stages onto a temporary roadway to carry Airport Parkway traffic around the constrution area at White Swan. Workers have already started to prepare the temporary roadway for traffic and are currently realigning traffic barriers in the area.
Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, outbound traffic on the Airport Parkway will be restricted to one lane, and beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, inbound traffic will be restricted to one lane as well. These restrictions will remain in effect through the weekend until 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, while construction workers remove median barrier and pave connections between the Airport Parkway and a one-mile-long temporary roadway. After 6 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, two-lane traffic outbound toward the airport will be established on the temporary roadway.
During Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 9-10, Airport Parkway traffic inbound will be restricted during off-peak hours from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. while construction workers continue to remove median barrier from the parkway. During non-peak hours, two-lane traffic will be restored in each direction. From 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, through Friday, Dec. 13, traffic will remain unrestricted.
Then on Saturday, Dec. 14, starting at 5 a.m., Airport Parkway traffic inbound will again be restricted to one-lane. Construction workers will complete paving of the inbound connections to the temporary roadway and complete realignment of temporary barriers. The inbound traffic will then be shifted onto the temporary roadway. Work should be completed by 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at which time traffic restrictions will be lifted.
Completion of the temporary roadway to carry Airport Parkway traffic around the White Swan Interchange marks a significant milestone in construction of the $210 million Southern Expressway. The temporary realignment of the parkway will now clear the area for Dick Enterprises to complete the mainline connection of the Airport Parkway and new Southern Expressway. Parkway traffic is expected to remain on the temporary roadway until the mainline Southern Expressway is completed and opened to traffic in the fall of 1992.
Motorists are asked to observe the 40-miles-per-hour speed limit and use caution in traveling through the restricted areas.
