PENNANT SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES FOUR NEW 4230 PRINTERS FOR AS/400 AND ES/9000 ENVIRONMENTS

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennant Systems, an IBM (NYSE: IBM) company, today announced four new models of its IBM 4230 printer, providing customers with a line of heavy-duty printers that are cost effective for a broad spectrum of printing uses. These versatile printers can be attached to IBM systems ranging from Enterprise System/9000(A) (ES/9000(A)) mainframes and Application System/400(A) (AS/400(A)) midrange systems to smaller System/36s and Personal System/2(A) personal computers.
"The IBM 4230 printers introduced today provide customers with the ability to select a printer that meets their specific needs. Customers can purchase the function they need today and upgrade the printers as their business needs expand," said Ron Kilpatrick, vice president, marketing, the Americas, for Pennant Systems.
New models of the heavy duty serial impact IBM 4230 printer offer customers improved price/performance through advanced features and capabilities. They are designed to provide many years of high use service. Advanced features such as custom setup profiles allow users to store and retrieve as many as four different printer setups, and to switch instantly from one application to another.
Two of the new 4230 models, Model 1S2 and Model 1I1, attach directly to the AS/400 via twinaxial cable. Model 1S2 provides spooling communications system (SCS), or line-by-line printing, with a maximum speed of 480 characters per second (cps); and Model 1I1 provides Intelligent Printer Data Stream(A) (IPDS(A)) capability which supports such advanced print functions as bar code printing and combined data, text and graphics on a single page. Model 1I1 has a maximum speed of 375 characters per second.
The two new models for the ES/9000 attach to the mainframe using coaxial cable and a coaxial controller. Model 2S2 provides SCS printing at a maximum speed of 480 cps; and Model 2I1 provides IPDS capabilities, and a maximum speed of 375 characters per second.
The compact size and low noise level of the 4230 make it well-suited to serve as either a heavy-duty, primary printer for small systems installations or as a workstation printer for larger systems. Its innovative forms handling features and easy-to-use operator controls and menu selections can improve productivity and virtually eliminate the frustration of paper jamming and costly paper loss.
The new models offer a wide range of advanced printing functions and attachment interfaces, and compatibility with 4230 and earlier IBM printers, protecting customer investment in forms inventory and applications software. The 4230's built-in upgrade capabilities, to higher-rated speed, additional memory and advanced printing applications, enable it to take on heavier print loads as operations expand in the future.
