PENN NATIONAL INSURANCE ANNOUNCES MOVE TO DOWNTOWN HARRISBURG

HARRISBURG, Pa., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Penn National Insurance announced today that it will build its new corporate headquarters on Market Square in downtown Harrisburg.
The company estimates that the new building will be ready for occupancy between June and August of 1995.
Plans include a 234,000-square-foot, 14-story office complex with ample expansion options for both office space and parking to accommodate the company's needs well into the next century.
The new headquarters building will house Penn National employees who work at several sites in the Greater Harrisburg area. These include the present headquarters buildings at 19th and Derry streets in Harrisburg, which house corporate operations, three underwriting offices and three subsidiaries. The new site will also house a fourth subsidiary that is currently in Camp Hill, Pa., and that subsidiary's satellite office, which is in Hershey, Pa. It will also house a claims service office currently located in Linglestown.
Approximately 600 employees will work in the new headquarters building.
President and Chief Executive Officer James I. Taylor, CPCU, ARM, said, "We're pleased to announce the selection of this new headquarters location. We believe it will serve our employees well for many years.
"For several months, we've been weighing the benefits of both this downtown Harrisburg site, and a site in Hampden Township, Cumberland County. We looked at both the economics and at employees' concerns, and we considered what would be in the best interest of our company and our policyholders, long-term.
"We found that the downtown Harrisburg site is best suited to our needs. Our company was founded in the city of Harrisburg in 1919. Although Hampden Township was quite attractive, we're pleased to be staying in the city of Harrisburg.
"Harrisburg offers us a superb location, close to major highways, rail travel and the airport. As a 14-story high-rise, our new building will have one of the city's best office identities. We will be within walking distance of dozens of restaurants, shops and businesses, and within walking distance of the attractions on City Island. By staying in the city, we're also maintaining our accessibility for employees who want to use public transportation for their commute."
The company has not yet concluded its planning for its present headquarters buildings at 19th and Derry streets.
The company sells business insurance and personal insurance through more than 1,200 independent insurance agencies in nine states. It ranks in the top 100 in net premiums written out of more than 1,250 U.S. property and casualty insurance groups.
