PENMAN & GREENWOOD INVESTIGATE: MAKING A SCAM HISTORY.

BOGUS family history firm William Pince Publishers has been scuppered by watchdogs.

We have repeatedly slated this Dutch outfit which sent junk mail saying it had researched your genealogy and offered a "chronicle" of your ancestors for pounds 67.80.

But the book was worthless and many who paid an extra pounds 17.95 for the "personal family tree", received just a blank sheet of paper. William Pince is the trading name of a firm called Historique, operated out of a mail drop in Southall, West London, but based in Holland. Now the Office of Fair Trading has used new powers that allow it to act against continental conmen.

The firm and director Wilhelmus Pince Van der Aa face court action if they repeat the deceitful sales pitch.

"The claims made by this company were false and misled people into thinking that a study had been conducted into their family history," said OFT chairman Sir John Vickers, left.
