PENGUIN AND R.R. DONNELLEY ENTER INTO A UNIQUE PUBLISHING PRINTING INITIATIVE

CHICAGO, Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Penguin USA, a widely diversified trade publisher, and R.R. Donnelley and Sons Co., the world's largest commercial printer, have entered into a long-term printing arrangement in which R.R. Donnelley will construct a new printing plant for Penguin's exclusive use. Ground has been broken for a 30,000-square foot modular printing facility to be built on the site of Penguin's new distribution center in Newbern, Tenn.
The agreement calls for R.R. Donnelley to print the majority of Penguin's one-color, trade paperback work. R.R. Donnelley's Newbern module will be equipped with state-of-the-art printing and binding equipment. Scheduled to start up in August 1993, the facility will employ approximately 30 people.
Peter Mayer, chief executive officer of The Penguin Group, said, "Over the last years in the U.S., we have sought to develop a much higher degree of responsiveness to the book trade. Going down this route we have integrated much of our publishing, closed warehouses and developed new installations for the warehousing and distribution of our books along with those of our clients. At the same time, we have set about developing a sophisticated retooling of our computer installations.
"Donnelley and Penguin started exploratory discussions more than three years ago on what I think will prove to be a revolutionary partnership and I believe the combination of Donnelley's innovativeness with Penguin's management and production specialists has created a new framework of value not only to the partners but also to authors and the trade.
"The advantages we look for are obvious: printing to order at agreed-upon prices, control of schedule and press time, lowering freight costs and more sophisticated use of inventory and the cash on which inventory depends. There is nothing like this development in book publishing. Everyone who has worked on it here has been part of a great excitement."
Jerry Butler, president of R.R. Donnelley's Book Group, said, "Building this module allows us to meet the needs of Penguin and to open up needed capacity at other plants to serve book customers. Both R.R. Donnelley and Penguin have taken a long-term view as opposed to a short- term focus. The facility also will have the capability to print for Penguin companies worldwide."
In addition to the new module, R.R. Donnelley's Book Group also operates manufacturing facilities in Crawfordsville, Ind., Harrisonburg, Va., Willard, Ohio, Reynosa, Mexico, and Bridgetown, Barbados.
R.R. Donnelley is the world's largest commercial printer of books, catalogs, newspaper advertising inserts, magazines, directories, financial printing and computer documentation. Headquartered in Chicago, the company has more than 30,000 employees who operate printing plants, sales offices, service centers and subsidiaries in more than 140 locations in North America, Europe, the Caribbean and Asia.
Penguin USA is part of the Penguin Publishing Group and is one of the Pearson Group of companies. Pearson's wide international interests span newspaper, book and electronic publishing, entertainment, broadcast media, investment banking, oil sources and fine china.
