PEER REVIEW ANALYSIS INC. RECEIVES ACCREDITATION
FROM THE UTILIZATION REVIEW ACCREDITATION COMMISSION
MALDEN, Mass., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Peer Review Analysis, Inc. (NASDAQ: PRAI) announced today that it has been accredited by the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC), an independent body established to effect consistency and quality in the healthcare utilization review (UR) industry.
URAC accreditation signifies that PRA complies with the commission's National Utilization Review Standards, which specify a level of capability and performance for healthcare utilization review firms.
"PRA is proud to be among the first UR firms in the country to receive URAC accreditation," said Eric R. Spitzer, president and chief executive officer of PRA. "Our Cooperative Care approach to controlling healthcare costs meets and often exceeds the URAC standards."
URAC, incorporated in February 1990, is the response of a meeting sponsored by the American Managed Care and Review Association (AMCRA) to address healthcare providers' concerns and frustrations with the diversity of UR procedures and with the growing impact of managed care on physicians and hospitals.
While the accreditation process is voluntary, URAC anticipates that some states will accept or mandate URAC accreditation. Connecticut, Indiana and North Dakota have already passed utilization review statutes that allow for the waiver of state certification requirements if a firm has received national accreditation.
"There is a growing trend among state legislative bodies to take an active role in setting standards that would bring some level of consistency to the UR industry," said Spitzer. "PRA's accreditation by URAC will facilitate the acceptance of our services in states that pass such UR statutes."
Founded in 1984, PRA provides a wide range of managed healthcare services designed to assure quality and appropriateness of medical treatment at the most reasonable cost, based on its physician- intensive Cooperative Care approach. PRA's services are a component of the healthcare programs of more than 9 million people nationwide. Its clients include major commercial health insurance companies, classical indemnity plans, HMOs, third-party healthcare administrators, and employer groups.
