PEDERSON NAMED TO MONTANA POWER BOARD

 BUTTE, Mont., June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Jerrold P. (Jerry) Pederson, 50, The Montana Power Co.'s (MPC) (NYSE: MTP) chief financial officer and a vice president, today was named to MPC's board of directors.
 Daniel T. Berube, MPC's chairman and chief executive officer, announced Pederson's election as a director of the company, effective July 1, as well as the resignation of Paul Schmechel from the board effective June 30. Schmechel, 66, retired last year as MPC's chairman but served for an additional year as a director; he has been a director since January 1979.
 Pederson, a native of Billings, earned a B.A. in business administration in 1964 from Gonzaga University. He joined Montana Power in 1965 as a junior auditor and worked in the auditing, accounting and tax departments before being promoted to assistant controller in 1980 and controller in 1982. In 1990, he was named vice president of corporate finance and controller, and in 1991 became vice president and chief financial officer.
