PECO SUBMITS REQUEST FOR SUBURBAN GAS RATE INCREASE, BUT BILL WILL BE BELOW 1989 LEVEL

PHILADELPHIA, May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Philadelphia Electric Company (NYSE: PE) (PECO) said today, after three years of lowering costs for its suburban natural gas customers, it has asked the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) for a rate increase.
If granted, the new rate would take effect Dec. 1, 1993. The annual bill for the typical suburban home heating customer using 115,000 cubic feet of natural gas would increase from $761 to $872, about 15 percent.
PECO said, even with this requested increase, the cost of gas service, compared with four years ago, would be $17 less for the typical residential customer. PECO reduced rates in December 1990, in 1991, and again in 1992.
PECO said the increase to gas customers results from the annual adjustment for the Company's purchased gas costs. The rate increase is necessary since a refund credit currently reducing PECO gas bills is expiring and the Company expects to pay more for their gas it must buy to serve its customers in 1994.
PECO serves some 360,000 gas customers in Delaware, Chester, Bucks and Montgomery counties in the suburban Philadelphia.
