PECO'S LIMERICK UNIT 2 TAKEN OFF LINE; WORLD CONTINUOUS RUN RECORD ENDS

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 20 ~PRNewswire~ -- The world continuous run record for Unit No. 2 at Philadelphia Electric Company's (NYSE: PE) (PECO) Limerick Generating Station ended this morning at 533 days.
The record ended, technically, at 4:11 a.m., when operators reduced reactor power and took the unit off the regional power grid to repair an electro hydraulic control (EHC) oil leak in a non nuclear portion of the plant.
The reactor itself, however, continues to operate at about 20 percent power, and the unit is expected to be reconnected to the power grid within 24 hours.
PECO said it was necessary to reduce power and shut down the unit's turbine generator to isolate and repair a leaking gasket on the EHC system, which controls the opening and closing of turbine control valves.
On Oct. 20, the unit surpassed the previous world continuous run record of 502 days set earlier this year by Florida Power & Light Company's St. Lucie Unit 2.
Limerick Unit 2 has operated continuously since returning from a refueling outage on June 5, 1991. Although the reactor continues to operate, the record technically ended when the unit was removed from the power grid.
Limerick Unit 1 continues to operate at full power. It has been on line since its return from a refueling outage on July 4, this year.
