PECO'S LIMERICK 2 BACK ON LINE AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

PHILADELPHIA, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Philadelphia Electric Company (NYSE: PE) (PE) said Unit 2 at its Limerick Generating Station in Montgomery County, Pa., is back on line, after completing a 53-day refueling outage.
The refueling and maintenance outage, which began Jan. 21, was one of the most efficient in PECO history. It was completed two weeks ahead of schedule and under budget.
Unit 2 was restarted Monday, March 15, and reconnected to the regional power grid Tuesday evening. The unit will undergo various tests and gradually move toward full power by the end of the week.
David Helwig, PECO vice president, Limerick, said the Limerick team is delighted. "The timely completion of the outage was achieved due to extensive employee involvement." Employees, he said, planned for months prior to the outage and devised numerous innovations which contributed to its success.
"The staff worked very hard to make as many improvements as possible, and they came together well to allow the outage to end earlier than anyone initially thought possible. Teamwork and quality execution of the plans were key," Helwig said.
It was the second refueling outage for Limerick 2, which began commercial
operation in January 1990. The first lasted 75 days, concluding on June 5, 1991. The unit proceeded to set a world record for continuous operation and achieved an industry-leading availability factor, capacity factor, and electric output for boiling water reactors in 1992.
The outage involved some 1,650 PE workers and contractors. During the outage, 240 of the unit's 764 fuel bundles were replaced, 26 plant modifications performed, and more than 2,200 maintenance tasks and surveillance tests completed.
Helwig said that the modifications, maintenance, and testing performed during the outage are geared to assure safe, efficient operation of the unit for the next two years.
