PEC considers sunsetting PM&D Section and Quality of Life and Career Committee.
The Program Evaluation Committee is moving toward a recommendation to terminate a Bar section and a committee.
PEC Chair Gwynne Young reported at the Board of Governors Key Biscayne meeting that the panel has voted to recommend ending the Practice Management and Development Section and the Quality of Life and Career Committee. But before that comes to the board, the PEC is looking at other options, including folding those entities into other Bar sections or committees.
Regarding the PM&D Section, Young said the PEC is seeking input from that section and the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section on whether PM&D could become part of the latter section or of another Bar committee. She said PEC anticipates bringing the matter to the board in January. On the Quality of Life and Career Committee, Young said the PEC was concerned that the committee was not meeting its mission. She said PEC will also report on that at the board's January meeting.
On other matters, Young said PEC members had high praise for the work of the Bar's Legal Needs of Children Committee.
"I think we made it clear to them again we are very impressed with what they are doing," she said.
PEC's only recommendation was for the children's committee to work closely with the Communications Committee to get better publicity on their activities.
PEC is also looking at a request from the Member Outreach Committee to change its name to the Diversity Outreach Committee. Young said the request encompasses more than a title change as the committee would also change its mission.
She said the PEC has asked the committee to come back in January with more information about its name and mission statement change, and will also be seeking input from the Equal Opportunities Law Section.
PEC also recommended, and the board approved, a change to Bar Rule 17-1.9, which clarifies that authorized house counsel do not have to take the Young Lawyers Division's Practicing with Professionalism course when they join the Bar under the authorized house counsel rule.
