PEARLE VISION ANNOUNCES SUPPORT OF VISION USA

DALLAS, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Pearle Vision, the world's leading eyewear and eyecare retailer, has announced that in support of the nationwide American Optometric Association (AOA) Vision USA program, 107 Pearle Vision optometrists are donating their time and services to each provide up to eight free Vision USA eye exams. The free eye exams will be given to uninsured, low-income individuals during "Save Your Vision Week" March 7-13.
In paving the way as an industry "goodwill" leader, Pearle Vision will also cover the cost of providing eyewear to those who are examined by Pearle doctors and need corrective lenses.
"Pearle Vision is a proud industry leader in strong support of Vision USA," said Ken Clanton, O.D., vice president, professional affairs for Pearle Vision. "Far too many people throughout America are in the unfortunate position of not being able to afford eyecare. Programs like Vision USA are bringing much needed attention and action to this issue. The gift of sight is something much too important to neglect."
Now in its third year, Vision USA is a non-profit charity sponsored by the AOA. The program provides free basic eye health and vision care services to uninsured, low income workers and their families.
To be eligible for the free Vision USA eye care, individuals must be working or be part of a household with one member working at least part time, have no government or private health insurance, have an income below an established level based on household size and have not had an eye examination during the previous 12 months.
Applicants were screened for eligibility during January. Those who qualify will be scheduled for appointments with participating doctors in their area. During the first two years of this nationwide program, more than 8,000 AOA-member optometrists donated their services to nearly 80,000 needy people. An estimated 8,000 doctors will examine roughly 40,000 patients during this year's Vision USA program.
Founded in 1961, Dallas-based Pearle Vision is the nation's leading eyewear and eyecare retailer with more than 1,000 stores worldwide.
