PEACH BOTTOM HOSTS JAPANESE EXCHANGE VISITORS

PEACH BOTTOM HOSTS JAPANESE EXCHANGE VISITORS
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- A small group of engineers,

nuclear operators and managers from a "sister" plant in Japan will be visiting Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station in York County, Pa., next week.
On Sunday, members of the Tokyo Electric Power Company will begin a five-day exchange visit.
The seven visitors are from the Kashiwazaki Kariwa Nuclear Power Station in Tokyo. Peach Bottom and Kashiwazaki Kariwa became "sister" plants four months ago to exchange information across the globe on nuclear operations.
Among the activities planned, the visitors will tour Peach Bottom and Philadelphia Electric Company's (NYSE: PSE) nuclear headquarters in Chesterbrook, Chester County, Pa. The Japanese guests are particularly interested in exchanging information on plant operations, radiation protection, and management procedures. Each Japanese visitor will get to meet his American counterpart and discuss the differences in their related jobs.
After arriving Sunday afternoon, the Japanese visitors and their interpreter will be at Peach Bottom Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. They will visit Chesterbrook on Tuesday.
This trip was arranged through the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Atlanta Center. During the past two-and-a-half years, the program has sponsored 56 plant-to-plant exchange visits. According to Donald B. Miller Jr., vice president of Peach Bottom, "This trip gives us a great opportunity to look at nuclear power from a world perspective. It gives us the chance to work with each other and discuss what we think we've done well."
Japan has one of the largest nuclear power programs in the world and is looking to double the number of reactors by the year 2010. At Kashiwazaki Kariwa, all the nuclear plants in operation or under construction are boiling water reactors (BWR's) similar to Peach Bottom's.
"This visit will be a valuable exchange of information," Miller said. In the fall, Peach Bottom plans to send some of its employees to Tokyo to continue the exchange of information.
